Overview of FanDuel Sportsbook

FanDuel Sportsbook Review 2023

FanDuel started as a daily fantasy sports site, and it’s in this niche that it grew its initial popularity. For a few years, it was the dominant market leader, with DraftKings its main competitor.

In 2018, European online gambling powerhouse Paddy Power BetFair bought FanDuel and soon launched the FanDuel online sportsbook, alongside an online casino.

As of 2020, the FanDuel sportsbook is still seen by many as a new kid on the block in the online sports betting world. But because experienced gambling giant Paddy Power backs FanDuel, there has been no shortage of sports bettors dying to sign up.

This is all thanks to the full range of sports you can bet on, the clean user-interface, the attractive welcome bonus, and the fact that you can easily switch between the sportsbook and the daily fantasy sports section.

And while many continue to think of FanDuel as a DFS site, it’s clear that the FanDuel sportsbook has wholly caught the DFS section up. Keep reading for more details on the FanDuel sportsbook.

Things To Consider Before Signing Up To a Sportsbook

Signing up to a sportsbook is a big decision because it means you have to hand over your banking details and personal information. It can also sometimes be a time-consuming process because some sites require you to verify your identity. As such, it’s really important that you take the time to do a bit of research first.

Before signing up to a sportsbook, here are some things to consider:

  • Welcome offer – All sportsbooks come with a welcome offer. For many bettors, it’s the welcome offer that persuades them to create an account.

Most sportsbooks offer a matched deposit welcome offer. For example, if the matched deposit welcome offer is 50% your first deposit, the sportsbook will treat you to $25 worth of free bets if you deposit $50.

Each welcome offer comes with terms and conditions, and winnings are typically capped. More rarely, a sportsbook will offer a no deposit welcome bonus, which you can grab just by creating an account.

  • Sports variety – You want to make sure that the sportsbook you sign up offers your favorite sports. The best sportsbook offers all the major leagues, such as the NBA and NFL, and a variety of niche sports, including volleyball and MMA.
  • Mobile app – Does the sportsbook have a mobile app? All the best ones do, but you also need to be sure the mobile experience is just as good as the desktop experience.
  • Site speed – Site speed is especially crucial if you enjoy in-play betting. The faster the site loads, the less likely it is to be left frustrated when you can’t get a bet on time.
  • Online casino – Does the sportsbook have an online casino? And if so, what’s the online casino experience like? Online casinos give you the chance to mix things up when you’re either a bit bored of sports betting, or there are currently no live sporting events that interest you.
  • Payment options – Every sports bettor has their preferred payment methods, but not all sportsbooks offer every single method. Before signing up, make sure the sportsbook in question has your preferred payment method

FanDuel Broken Down: What’s It Got?

Sports You Can Bet On

FanDue might be one of the newest names in the online sports betting world, but its sports variety is right up there with the best of them. Perhaps driven both by Paddy Power and the fact that FanDuel was originally a DFS site, its sportsbook offers lines for all the major sports, as well as numerous niche ones.

American bettors will, of course, be happy to see the likes of NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and golf on the FanDuel sportsbook. But those who enjoy betting on sports that have more international appeal, such as tennis, cricket, rugby, MMA, and motor racing, will also be happy.

And when it comes to soccer, FanDuel really excels. It offers lines for multiple soccer leagues worldwide, including the Bundesliga, English Premier League, and La Liga.

Here is a full list of the sports you can bet on:

  • Australian Rules Football
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • College Basketball
  • College Football
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • MMA
  • NASCAR
  • Rugby
  • Soccer
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis

Live Betting

Live betting is starting to be a common feature at all the top sportsbooks. FanDuel also offers live betting (in-play), and there are usually at least a few live markets at any time of the day.

Live betting is available for all the top sports at FanDuel. However, the lines are somewhat limited compared to other sportsbooks. For example, with in-play tennis, lines are typically restricted to just set winners and game-winners. This is in contrast to some sportsbooks that also offer lines for point winners and more fun lines, such as “next two game-winners” and “next break of serve.”

Up-to-date statistics are also lacking for some sports, making it harder for you to gauge what bet to place. On the other hand, FanDuel offers live streaming for multiple matches, which helps you understand how a match is playing out, and they update their odds quickly.

Casino

FanDuel’s online casino differs according to what state you’re in. If you’re in the state of Pennsylvania, you get the standalone FanDuel online casino that comes complete with FanDuel’s branding. If you’re in New Jersey, you’re taking to the BetFair casino, and the first thing you’ll notice is that the branding is entirely different from the FanDuel sportsbook, as is the layout.

The reason for this is because PaddyPower BetFair bought out FanDuel in 2018 and decided that, instead of creating an online casino from scratch, they would instead just link out to the already successful BetFair casino.

So what do you get at the BetFair casino?

For one thing, you get access to numerous classic slots, video slots, table games, scratch cards, and even arcade games. All the big names are here, including roulette and blackjack, while a risk-free welcome offer currently gives new players to get started with up to $200 of free bets.

You can access the casino via your web browser or your mobile device, or you can download and install the app. The jackpots are huge, often climbing to more than £100,000, and the customer support team is available 24/7, which will suit bettors who sometimes get a bit nervous when things go wrong.

But perhaps the most attractive feature about the BetFair casino is that there is no house edge at the time of writing. This is very unusual in the online casino world – in fact, BetFair is currently the one and only online casino that has no house edge.

Both the FanDuel casino “proper’ and the BetFair casino make it easy for bettors to find the responsible gaming functions, which I really like. Meanwhile, navigation in the main lobby is fast and intuitive, and you can jump from one room to another at the click of a button.

But while you can access the casino on your web browser or as a mobile app, downloading the app isn’t a simple process.

Poker

Video poker is very popular at FanDuel – and for a good reason. Table payouts are estimated to be around 99%, which is very good for an online casino. It’s one of the best I’ve seen and should suit value hunters.

That said, if you are a value hunter, you might want to avoid Deuces Wild, as this is one video poker game that doesn’t payout quite as good.

Traffic for the poker tables is good. They might not always be full, but – most of the time – they are almost full and return between 98 and 99% to the player.

There are also plenty of multi-line games offered, and FanDuel’s overall poker offering is solid.

eSports

eSports is available in all the states where FanDuel is legally operated, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. FanDuel was the first sportsbook to offer eSports selections, and while League of Legends was once the only eSports offering, FanDuel has upped their game on this front.

That said, while eSports continues to be a lucrative market for sportsbooks, FanDuel seemed to have toned down their eSports selections in recent weeks. When I signed up to the site and tested it out, I couldn’t find a dedicated tab for eSports.

Whether FanDuel has decided to remove eSports altogether remains to be seen, but the fact that locating eSports is so difficult is either a website navigational error or FanDuel has indeed to remove eSports selections.

User Interface

Site navigation is very good. You can easily flip between the sportsbook and the casino by clicking one of the tabs at the top of the page, while sports are listed A-Z in a column to the left of the screen.

FanDuel has also added a “popular” tab to the top left of the homepage, which will suit casual sports bettors who want a fast, easy way of betting. Put simply; it shows you the 5 most popular sporting events that FanDuel bettors are betting on.

Another useful aspect of the user interface is the fact that, when you put a wager on, FanDuel gives you the option to turn your bet into a round-robin or a teaser with just one click. Line changes are updated automatically, too, and when they do update, you’re given the option to either go ahead with the bet or to look elsewhere.

Things like this might not sound like a lot, but they help to make a sportsbook more user-friendly.

Overall, the site layout is unfussy, intuitive, and neatly arranged. I’d also say it’s one of the cleanest and most minimal sportsbooks I’ve seen. This will especially suit sports bettors who otherwise feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of markets, lines, odds, and sporting events that are sometimes thrust at you on a sportsbooks homepage.

And if you’re a total beginner, FanDuel might suit you. There’s no learning curve involved because it’s so easy to find a sporting event and a bet (the fact that there actually aren’t too many lines offered is a bonus for beginners).

Payment Methods

Crucial to a good sportsbook is the banking options. On this front, FanDuel exceeds all expectations. Whatever your preferred payment method is, FanDuel surely accepts it.

The only issue I can see is with credit and debit cards. While both cards are accepted, there are a few banks that block payments to FanDuel. These banks are as follows:

  • Huntington Bank
  • Union Bank
  • D. Bank
  • Wells Fargo
  • Capital One
  • Bank of America

Most prepaid cards will be rejected too. For the ones that are accepted, you can deposit and withdraw money.

If your bank is on the list, the good news is that FanDuel accepts PayPal as a deposit method. PayPal is one of the most popular payment methods because – unlike credit or debit card – deposits are made instantly. Withdrawal times are also good.

Alternatively, you can deposit funds via online bank transfer, provided that your bank allows this. Funds are usually deposited into your sportsbook account instantly. Bare in mind, though; not all banks will allow online bank transfer to a sportsbook. Here are the current ones that do:

  • Huntington Bank
  • Union Bank
  • TD Bank
  • Wells Fargo
  • Capital One
  • Bank of America

Another payment option open to you is PayNearMe. To deposit funds into your F.D. account this way, you just need to go to a Family Dollar, CVS or 7-Eleven and pay with money. Deposits are capped at $500 every 24 hours, and it usually takes 15 minutes for your funds to transfer.

Lastly, you can also deposit money via check (you can withdraw your winnings this way, too. Check withdrawals take 5-7 business days).

FanDuel Daily Fantasy Sports

It’s common knowledge that FanDuel started as a daily fantasy sports site before evolving into a sportsbook. It remains one of the best DFS sites in the U.S., although it’s not the largest (DraftKings is the biggest).

Prize pools are a little on the small side compared to DraftKings, but this has a huge benefit to beginners and casual bettors – namely, there are fewer pro players on FanDuel than there are on DraftKings, which gives everyone a better chance of winning.

Naturally, there are still some pros who play at FanDuel, and I noticed a few of them when I played. However, the site separates them from the beginners so that newbies don’t risk all their cash against a pro!

Tournament-wise, there are six sports to choose from:

  • EPL
  • NASCAR
  • PGA
  • CFB
  • MLB
  • NFL

It’s a solid (if not spectacular) selection, and each sport offers multiple tournaments. This is important to note because, while DraftKings offers more sports, FanDuel offers more tournaments.

Entry fees are small, and you generally won’t need to pay more than a few cents for most tournaments. There are free tournaments available, too, although the bigger events will – of course – demand a much bigger fee. But it just means that there’s something for everyone.

Moreover, there have been instances when the buy-in for a Sunday NFL event was just $15, which is pretty damn cheap when you consider that the prize pool can be way over $3,000,000.

In terms of the user interface, FanDuel’s tournament area would benefit from being simplified a tad. At the moment, it’s tricky to navigate, and there will be a learning curve involved for beginners. For example, when you click on the Discover page, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options that you’re confronted with.

Still, it’s neatly organized and, once you’re into the swing of things, you should be just fine. As a bonus, there are tips for beginners that I definitely recommend reading if you’ve never visited the FanDuel DFS site before. There is also a research section that will prove handy for newbies. Here, you’ll find numerous resources that will help you get a feel for things.

The site also has a section of articles on sports like the MLB, the NBA, and the NFL. These are all written by sports and statistics experts, and they’re designed to help you make better decisions.

Bonuses and Promotions: Fan Duel Offers

I have to say that FanDuel is one of the best sportsbooks when it comes to bonuses and promotions. It even has a FanDuel “Promotions” tab at the top of the homepage, which takes you directly to a feast of promotions.

Here’s a look at the current FanDuel offers:

Welcome bonus – The welcome bonus varies according to whether you sign up to the sportsbook of the daily fantasy sports app. If you sign up to the latter, FanDuel will give you a $5 bonus when you make your first deposit. If you sign up to the sportsbook, you get the chance to bag a risk-free bet on any sport worth up to $500

There’s also the first-day risk-free bet up to $200 available for the FanDuel casino

Overall, FanDuel’s welcome bonuses are generous when compared to rivals. To grab them, you just need to create an account, make a deposit and enter a promo code (which you can find on the website)

Other promotions at the sportsbook include:
  • Countdown clock welcome offer – Very occasionally, FanDuel runs a limited time first deposit offer. To be eligible for a free bet, you need to make your first deposit by X time. You will be given a voucher which can be used in a specified DFS contest.
  • Tournament specials – Each there’s a major tournament, FanDuel typically runs a related promo. For example, they’re currently running a Big Cat Bonus, which nets you a 50% profit boost each time you win a Tiger Woods live bet in the PGA.
  • Win From Home – With $1,000 in daily payouts, this FanDuel promo is really simple: You just need to select your props, lock them in by a specified time and go 5/5 any day of the week in order to spit the guaranteed $1,000 with fellow winners
  • NBA Finals Win Bonus – This is a promo that FanDuel runs each year. When you place a $50+ futures bet on any NBA team to win the championship, F.D. gives you $10 worth of site credit each time your pick wins any of their first 5 games of the season.
  • MLB World Series Win Bonus – This promo works a lot like the NBA Finals win bonus. You need to place a $50+ bet on any MLB team to win the World Series, and the website credits your account with $5 each if they win any of their first 10 games of the season.

The DSF app, meanwhile, has its own FanDuel offers. These include:

  • World Fantasy Football Championship – If you reach the final, FanDuel will lay on a free trip to NYC, as well as the chance to win $2,000,000
  • NFL Play Free Until You Win – This is a free tournament (no buy-in) that, despite the lack of a buy-in still offers prize money
  • Referral bonus – If you refer a friend and they join the site via the link you sent them, you could win as much as $25

Territories: Where Is FanDuel Daily Fantasy Sports Legal?

FanDuel daily fantasy sports are legal in almost every U.S. state. However, there are a handful of states where it’s banned.

Here is a rundown of the states where you can’t play FanDuel DFS:

  • Arizona
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Louisiana
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • Washington

What Are Others Saying About FanDuel?

For the sake of balance, fairness, and transparency, I like to take a look at what other customers are saying about the sportsbooks I review.

When it comes to FanDuel, the general consensus is that it’s a fun site with good customer service and good payouts. Beginners especially like it.

FanDuel FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Both of these daily fantasy sports sites have their pros and cons. DraftKings has a bigger prize pool, but FanDuel is better for beginners. It also has more varied contest types.

Check out our DraftKings review to help you make a better decision.

It depends on which banking option you choose. PayPal withdrawals are typically processed within 24 hours, but credit, debit card, and bank transfer can take as many as 7 business days.

The FanDuel sportsbook is legal in Colorado, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

FanDuel is owned by Paddy Power BetFair, a prominent European gambling company that’s responsible for U.K. sportsbooks Paddy Power and BetFair. The company (and FanDuel itself) are 100% reputable and trustworthy.

When you participate in the FanDuel DFS, you get the chance to enter the FanDuel players club. Essentially, this is their version of a loyalty program.

Once you’re a member of the players club, you can earn points each time you enter a paid contest. Each time you pay $1, you get rewarded with 5 points.

Over time, you can use your points to enter more contests without spending your own cash.

FanDuel largely works the same as any sportsbook: You just need to create an account and make your first deposit before placing a bet.

The major difference is that FanDuel also has a daily fantasy sports site and app that you can download separately.

Verdict On FanDuel Sports Betting

FanDuel remains one of the biggest names in the DFS world. And while its sportsbook is relatively new, there’s so much going for it that it’s hard to ignore. Moreover, the fact that it combines daily fantasy sports with its sportsbook and a casino is a major win.

If you think FanDuel might be the sportsbook for you, the next step is to create an account and grab the welcome bonus. If you’re not sure, feel free to check out our other sportsbook reviews.
