Helpful Stats and Facts For Betting On The Super Bowl

Whenever you place a bet on a major sporting event like the Super Bowl, it’s always a good idea to use stats and facts to back up your bets. This allows you to wager with confidence. In this section, I’m going to share with you some helpful stats and facts for betting on the Super Bowl, but I also recommend that you keep researching stats in your own time, too.

  • Favorites win most of the time. In the last 53 Super Bowls, the favorites have a record of 35-17-1
  • In the last ten years, though, the underdogs have caught up. The favorites record since 2010 is 3-6-1
  • The average margin of victory in the Super Bowl is 14 points
  • 11 of the last 20 Super Bowls have been decided by a single touchdown (or less)
  • In tight spreads, the favorites are 8-1-1 straight-up
  • In terms of Super Bowl MVPs, the Quarterback has won it 29 times
  • Less than 5% of games in the 2017 and 2018 NFL seasons had a safety

The Most Popular Types of Super Bowl Bets

It’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of things!

The best thing about the Super Bowl (apart from your team winning) is that there are lots of different types of bets you can place. Here are the most popular types of Super Bowl bets explained:

Straight Bet

The straight bet is a standard wager that’s super simple. All you have to do is bet on either the money line, total, or the side of a point spread. When one of those things happens, you win the wager.

However, I want to take a look at two straight bets more closely:

Moneyline Bet

A moneyline bet is when you wager on a team to win the Super Bowl straight-up. For example, I might bet on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl. That’s literally it – there’s no spread involved, and you don’t need to stress about how big the victory is or anything like that.

Betting Against The Spread

Against the spread betting (or ATS as it’s also known) is another popular Super Bowl bet that’s a little more complex than the moneyline bet. Let’s look at an example and imagine that the Patriots are (-1) to win the Super Bowl this year. If you back them, the point spread is such that they need to win by two or more points for you to win your wager.

On the other hand, let’s say the Bills are (+1). If you back them, the point spread is such that the Super Bowl can finish a tie, but you will still win your money.

Over/Under

Another really popular Super Bowl bet is the over/under bet. It’s pretty simple. Before the game starts, sportsbooks will pick a combined total final score they think might occur. It’s then up to you to decide whether or not you think the actual combined total final score will be higher or lower.

It’s a fun bet that you can place in-play, too. As the game goes on, the sportsbook will adjust their odds, as well as their over/under offers, and it’s up to you to read the game and make your guess.

Props

Props betting is really popular when it comes to the Super Bowl because there’s a lot you can bet on. In fact, there’s so much you can wager on that – traditionally – some props bets have been really bizarre.

Essentially, if you can think of a proposition, there’s a high chance you’ll be able to wager on it. For example, you could wager on whether or not a specific player will tweet during the game, which auto brand commercial will be aired first … and whether or not any players will be arrested post-game!

Of course, winning props bets is often down to pure luck rather than judgment, and they don’t require any great skill. But as mentioned, they can be a lot of fun.

Super Bowl Betting Strategy

Now we’ve come to the serious stuff! In this section, I’m going to show you TWO Super Bowl strategies that I’ve personally used in the past, and which can yield good results.

Bet At The Right Time

For me, timing is everything when it comes to placing a successful bet. Experienced bettors develop an uncanny knack of betting at the right time.

For example, let’s say you plan to back the underdogs at this year’s Super Bowl. The best thing to do in this case is to wait until the line rises before backing them. Your aim is to see how high it goes. Even if it stays under 3, the moneyline will still favor you.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a good feeling about the favorite, it’s a better idea to place your bet early. Why? Because the last thing you want is for the line to move unfavorably as the game approaches.

Betting at the right time is especially key when it comes to the total score. For instance, you might be tempted by 52.5. But before you’ve placed your bet, bettors have flooded the market with cash, safety, and the odds for 52.5 have considerably worsened.

Fade The High Totals

Speaking of totals …

The funny thing about the 2020 Super Bowl was that a LOT of money went on 54.5. In fact, 99% of all over/under cash wagered went on this combined point total.

Why do I say that it was a “funny thing”? Because that number is astronomical. It’s one of the highest combined point totals in Super Bowl history.

It doesn’t seem to matter how prolific teams are coming into the Super Bowl. History shows us that, in most Super Bowls, the smart money is on the under bet.

How far under? It’s up to you to decide where the value is. But here’s something to consider: Super Bowl’s are rarely shootouts because teams can choke. They drop the ball. They’re a little off-balance. In the 2020 Super Bowl, the first touchdown wasn’t scored until near the end of the first quarter.

Top Tips For Betting On The Super Bowl

A good strategy should always be underpinned by good betting habits. Here are my top tips for betting on the Super Bowl:

Spend the half-time show doing your research

While your buddies are refilling their drinks and wolfing down their hot dogs, you need to spend your half-time researching odds. Why? Because bookies are historically slow to react at half-time due to a lack of information and odds. If you work hard during this time, you can find value bets.

Avoid When Both Sides Are Listed At -120

When the sportsbook lists both sides at -120, you could be in a serious amount of bother if you decide to enter the market and back one of them. Why? Because you’ve got to overcome a heck of a lot of juice.

Avoid The Safety Bet

Another bet worth avoiding is the safety bet. If you fade the safety bet, you’ll need to lay something like -1000. Where’s the upside? It’s not there. According to the stats, I showed you earlier, less than 5% of games in the 2017 and 2018 NFL seasons had a safety.

Understand The Lines

There are two types of lines:

  • True line
  • Fair line

The latter is based on public perception. For the 2020 Super Bowl, sportsbooks made Chiefs the 1.5-point favorite, which caused a flurry of activity on behalf of the public. They were drawn to the Chiefs, understandably. Yet, when it all boiled down to it, the Chiefs weren’t really the favorites.

This is why it’s important to not only understand lines but also to do your own research. Delve into the stats and data (you can use tools for this, which I’ll be looking at in the next section).

Common Online Super Bowl Betting Tools

To aid your understanding of the Super Bowl, and to allow you to place the best possible bets, it’s always well worth using tools.

Here are some of the most common online Super Bowl tools used by myself and other bettors:

Swish Analytics is my favorite tool for diving into the data and crunching the numbers. It’s driven by AI, and it allows you to get a more accurate prediction of what might unfold during the Super Bowl in terms of totals, a first touchdown and so on

I never place a bet without comparing the odds between different sportsbooks first. Use OddsPortal find the best odds for the Super Bowl

You’ll save yourself a major headache if you use a tool like Bet Calculator to figure out the value of a particular bet

Bang The Book Radio is an entertaining podcast where experts dissect the latest NFL stats to help you place better bets. They also keep you up-to-date with the latest odds for the Super Bowl

Final Word On Super Bowl Betting

Betting on the Super Bowl is a lot of fun. Now that you know more about how to do it, the next step is to choose a sportsbook that’s right for you and implement the strategies and tips outlined in this article. I wish you the best of luck.
